Origin:
The term "vanitas" comes from the Book of Ecclesiastes (Ecclesiastes 1:2) in the Old Testament, where it says, "All is vanity" (Ecclesiastes 1:2).
Meaning:
"Vanitas" symbolizes the transience of all worldly things and the inevitability of death.
Vanitas still life:
A vanitas still life is a type of painting that was particularly popular in Baroque painting. In it, inanimate objects, such as jewelry or luxury goods, are combined with symbols of transience to emphasize the transience of existence.
Vanitas symbols:
Typical vanitas symbols include skulls, extinguished candles, leaking hourglasses, wilted flowers, broken glasses, letters, playing cards, and dice.
Memento Mori:
The "vanitas" theme is closely related to the "memento mori" motif, which means "think of your death."
I arranged the scenery like a crime scene, when two special agents inspect what happened to classify and break down all hidden notes.
Because that is what the recipient will do: Collecting what is apparently part of a classical vanitas painting. And what I added in addition.
For example, I used the 3D sculpture of the US-American artist DANIEL ASHARM, which was made by the russian designer Danil Yad. Not only one reference meet another, but also the hourglass held by the sculpture is a classical element of Vanitas paintings.
In addition, there is a book on Modern Art or the biography of one of my favourite painters: Jean-Michel Basquiat.
I added replicas of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, like a casket and several other objects, that used to be collected today, as it is supposed to bring good luck.
And the famous DeLorean car used in the movie "Back To The Future" (Scale 1:6). This movie is banned in China, as only the communist party decides what the past and the future looks like. No one should be inspired to define that on his/her own.
