DESCRIPTION

Whether crowned or standing on a crescent moon, usually with the Christ Child, sometimes with her mother, Mary, especially as the Virgin Mary or Madonna, is one of the most frequent and significant motifs in art history, particularly in Western Christian art. Her depiction has changed considerably over time, reflecting both theological developments and artistic movements.

Symbolism:

Mary is often depicted with a blue mantle, which connects heaven and earth, the earthly and the divine.

Blue is the color of the sky and symbolizes Mary's Assumption.

Red, the color of her robe, can represent her maternal role and her human nature.

Other types of Marian images:

- The Madonna of Mercy: Mary spreads her mantle protectively over believers.

- Mary praying (Maria orans).

- Mary as mother with child (Madonna lactans).

- Mary with Christ in a halo (Mandorla).

Mary in Modern Art:

Modern artists have also explored the theme of Mary and motherhood, often from socio-critical and personal perspectives.

The portrayal of motherhood is diverse and encompasses themes such as unfulfilled desires for children, unwanted pregnancies, and dysfunctional families.

For me, Giovanni Battista Salvi's "The Virgin Mary in Prayer" and Oscar Alonzo's "Assumption of the Virgin" are particularly outstanding.
