In art, the side profile, or simply profile, refers to a depiction of the face in which the head is turned at a right angle to the viewer. This means that only one half of the face is visible, and the other eye is no longer visible, similar to a silhouette.

Distinguishing features from other portrait styles:

En face (front view): The face is shown frontally, directly facing the viewer.

Half-profile: The face is turned slightly to the side, but the other eye is still visible.

Three-quarter view: One side of the head is fully visible, the other is foreshortened.

Lost profile (three-quarter view from behind): A variation of the three-quarter profile in which the side of the face facing the viewer is shown in a highly foreshortened form.

Characteristics of the profile:

The head is turned 90 degrees away from the viewer.

The nose, chin, forehead, and hairline form a distinct line.

The mouth may be emphasized differently depending on the depiction.

The profile is particularly well-suited for depicting character and expression, but can also be used as a decorative element.
