In art, the side profile, or simply profile, refers to a depiction of the face in which the head is turned at a right angle to the viewer. This means that only one half of the face is visible, and the other eye is no longer visible, similar to a silhouette.
Distinguishing features from other portrait styles:
En face (front view): The face is shown frontally, directly facing the viewer.
Half-profile: The face is turned slightly to the side, but the other eye is still visible.
Three-quarter view: One side of the head is fully visible, the other is foreshortened.
Lost profile (three-quarter view from behind): A variation of the three-quarter profile in which the side of the face facing the viewer is shown in a highly foreshortened form.
Characteristics of the profile:
The head is turned 90 degrees away from the viewer.
The nose, chin, forehead, and hairline form a distinct line.
The mouth may be emphasized differently depending on the depiction.
The profile is particularly well-suited for depicting character and expression, but can also be used as a decorative element.
Significance in art history:
Throughout art history, the profile has frequently been used to depict rulers, saints, or important figures.
It often served as a symbol of dignity, strength, or power.
During the Renaissance, the profile was immortalized on medals and coins.
The profile is still used in modern art, often in connection with the exploration of identity and expression.
VERDE means green in Spanish. The color green is (along with red and blue) a primary color in additive color mixing.
